The Scars You Can’t See: How Gender-Based Violence Lives on the Mind

Dr. Rosemary Lartey-Nyaunu · Scientific Lead
In this editorial

Gender-based violence (GBV) is often recognized by its visible injuries, yet some of its deepest wounds cannot be seen. Long after the physical, verbal, or emotional abuse has ended, many women and girls continue to carry psychological scars that shape how they think, feel, relate to others, and navigate daily life. In this editorial, we examine what the science reveals about the long-lasting psychological effects of gender-based violence and how women can begin to recognize these patterns, understand why they persist, and access care grounded in evidence rather than assumption.
